IoT safety

The current trend in business and technology, which is also labeled as Industry 4.0 is transforming manufacturing using automation and data exchange. In the Industry 4.0 concept all components of industrial production systems (machines, robots, electronic controllers, sensors and even component parts in some cases) have internet connectivity and can perform machine-to-machine (M2M) and machine-to-human (M2H) communication. Applying this technology, smart factories of the future may operate more efficiently, cost effectively, with increased flexibility and improved robustness. From an information security perspective, it is relatively easy to deduce that the great potential in the efficiency of cyber-physical systems also involves countless threats. There are numerous information security and data management incidents related to using the Internet. Imagine deliberate damage by hackers to a large chemical plant, refinery or power station with smart solutions like operating internet-enabled robots and assembly lines. Such an attack can cause loss of human lives, not only financial and material damage.

Developed in the project “Implementing secure access protection in Industry 4.0 cyber-physical systems - 2018-1.1.1-MKI-2018-00052”, DeGu is designed to improve data security and service robustness for the operation of various cyber-physical systems. The solution issues and manages IoT security certificates for industrial devices and network components. By using certificates, we can achieve a high level of data security in all phases of industrial processes because the devices will be identified during communication with each other.
